People use these words daily. In calendars. During festivals. At school too. Pretty cool, right?

Here’s all twelve months in Kannada:

See? Modern Kannada speakers use names like English ones. Just with Kannada sounds. These are the months used in schools. Offices. Papers. You know, official stuff.

But wait – there’s more! Kannada also has old-style months. Based on the moon calendar. Let’s learn those too.

Chaitra March–April Ugadi festival happens in Chaitra.
Vaishakha April–May Akshaya Tritiya is in Vaishakha.
Jyeshtha May–June Farmers start sowing seeds in Jyeshtha.
Ashadha June–July Ashadha month has special pujas.
Shravana July–August Varalakshmi Vratam is in Shravana.
Bhadrapada August–September Ganesha Chaturthi comes to Bhadrapada.
Ashwina September–October Dussehra is celebrated in Ashwina.
Kartika October–November Deepavali is in Kartika month.
Margashira November–December People visit temples in Margashira.
Pushya December–January Sankranti preparations begin in Pushya.
Magha January–February Ratha Saptami is in Magha.
Phalguna February–March Holi is in Phalguna.

People use these names for religious stuff. Like festivals. Star signs. Cultural events in Karnataka. 

Difference Between Modern and Traditional 

Modern months? They follow the world calendar. Everyone uses them daily. For office work. School stuff.

Traditional months? They follow the moon. People use them for festivals. Holy days. Religious stuff.

Both systems work together in Karnataka. People switch between them easily. It depends on what they’re talking about.

How to Say “Month” 

The word for “month”? It’s Tingalu.

Examples:
• This month – Ee tingalu
• Next month – Mundina tingalu
• Last month – Hindina tingalu

Try these sentences:
• Naanu ee tingalu Bengaloorige hoguttene. (I’m going to Bangalore this month.)
• Nanna huttuhabba mundina tingalu. (My birthday’s next month.)
• Naavu hindina tingalu Mysurige hodevu. (We went to Mysore last month.)

Learning Kannada Months with Simple Memory Tricks

January (Janavari) – Think “new year.” Sounds like English “January.”

February (Phebravari) – Same thing. Just say it slower.

March (Maarch) – Exactly the same!

April (Epril) – Starts with the “eh” sound. Easy!

May (Me) – Same as English.

June (Joon) and July (Julai) – Super close to English. Just stretch the sounds a bit.

August (Agasth) – “aa” sound at start. Make it longer.

September (September), October (Aktobar), November (Navembar), December (Disembar) – All follow English. Just Kannada sounds.
