When learning to translate from Hindi to English, one of the most important yet challenging aspects is mastering the past tense. Hindi and English handle tenses differently in terms of structure, usage, and auxiliary verbs. Whether you’re a student, translator, or language enthusiast, understanding how to accurately translate past tense from Hindi to English is essential for clear and grammatically correct communication.

Overview of Past Tense in Hindi

past tense hindi to englishdfgtrty

In Hindi, the past tense is divided into several forms:

  • Simple Past (साधारण भूतकाल)
  • Past Continuous (अपूर्ण भूतकाल)
  • Past Perfect (पूर्ण भूतकाल)
  • Past Perfect Continuous (पूर्ण अपूर्ण भूतकाल)

Each form conveys different aspects of completed or ongoing actions in the past, and each has its corresponding structure in English.

Simple Past Tense

Structure in Hindi:
Subject + Object + Verb (in past form) + था/थी/थे (if needed for gender and number)

Example in Hindi:

  • उसने खाना खाया।
  • मैं स्कूल गया।

Translation in English:

  • He ate food.
  • I went to school.

Notes:
In Hindi, gender and number affect the auxiliary verbs (था/थी/थे), but in English, the past form of the verb alone (ate, went, did) conveys the action clearly.

Past Continuous Tense

Structure in Hindi:
Subject + Object + Verb root + रहा/रही/रहे + था/थी/थे

Example in Hindi:

  • वह खाना खा रहा था।
  • वे खेल रहे थे।

Translation in English:

  • He was eating food.
  • They were playing.

Notes:
Hindi uses “रहा था” type constructions, while English uses “was/were + verb-ing.” Matching the subject with the correct auxiliary verb (was/were) is key in English.

Past Perfect Tense

Structure in Hindi:
Subject + Object + Verb (past participle form) + चुका था/चुकी थी/चुके थे

Example in Hindi:

  • मैंने काम कर लिया था।
  • वह जा चुका था।

Translation in English:

  • I had completed the work.
  • He had left.

Notes:
English uses “had + past participle” to indicate that one past action was completed before another past action. Hindi uses “चुका था” and similar forms to express the same.

Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Structure in Hindi:
Subject + Verb root + रहा/रही/रहे + था/थी/थे + समय का उल्लेख (for how long)

Example in Hindi:

  • वह दो घंटे से पढ़ रहा था।
  • हम सुबह से काम कर रहे थे।

Translation in English:

  • He had been studying for two hours.
  • We had been working since morning.

Notes:
This tense shows an action that started in the past and continued until another point in the past. The structure “had been + verb-ing” in English corresponds to Hindi’s “रहा था” with a time marker.

Common Errors and How to Avoid Them

Incorrect Verb Form Usage:
Hindi speakers may say, “He gone” instead of “He went” or “He had gone.”

Tip: Always use the correct past tense form of the verb. For irregular verbs, memorize their past forms.

Misusing Was/Were:
“She were cooking” instead of “She was cooking.”

Tip: Use “was” for singular subjects (I, he, she, it) and “were” for plural (you, we, they).

Literal Translation of Auxiliary Verbs:
Translating “था” literally as “was” when it’s not needed in English can cause confusion.

Tip: Understand the function of auxiliary verbs. In English, not all Hindi auxiliaries are translated directly.

Practice Makes Perfect

To master the translation of past tense from Hindi to English:

  • Read bilingual texts.
  • Translate short Hindi paragraphs to English.
  • Use grammar checkers to refine sentence structure.
  • Speak and write in English to reinforce your learning.

Exercise Example:
Translate this Hindi sentence into English:
“वह कल बाजार गया था।”
Correct Answer: He had gone to the market yesterday.
