The Present Indefinite Tense (also called the Simple Present Tense) is used to talk about habits, routines, general truths, and things that happen regularly. When we form questions (interrogative sentences) in this tense, we use specific structures to ask about actions or events.

In Hindi, Present Indefinite Tense interrogative sentences can be formed easily. For example:

  • “क्या तुम स्कूल जाते हो?”
  • “क्या वह खाना खाता है?”

In English, the structure for forming interrogative sentences in Present Indefinite Tense is slightly different. Let’s explore how to construct such sentences.

Structure of Present Indefinite Tense Interrogative Sentences

Basic Structure:

For questions, the structure is:

Do/Does + Subject + Base Form of Verb + Object?

  • Do is used with I, you, we, and they.
  • Does is used with he, she, and it.

Examples:

  • Do you like coffee?
    (क्या तुम कॉफी पसंद करते हो?)
  • Does she work in an office?
    (क्या वह एक ऑफिस में काम करती है?)
  • Do they go to school every day?
    (क्या वे रोज़ स्कूल जाते हैं?)

Important Points to Remember:

  • In Present Indefinite, the base form of the verb is always used in the question.
  • The verb “do” or “does” is added to form the question, except when the subject is a third-person singular (he, she, it).

Key Rules for Forming Interrogative Sentences

When the subject is “he”, “she”, or “it”:

Use “does” with the base form of the verb.

  • Does he play football?
  • Does she eat vegetables?

When the subject is “I”, “you”, “we”, or “they”:

Use “do” with the base form of the verb.

  • Do I look okay?
  • Do you like pizza?

In negative questions:

      (क्या सूरज पूर्व से उगता है?)

Asking about facts:

    • Do cats like milk?
      (क्या बिल्लियाँ दूध पसंद करती हैं?)
