Tenses are the heart of any language. They help you talk about time. English has clear tense rules. Hindi also shows time through simple structures. When you practice tenses, your speaking becomes smooth. Your writing becomes clear. Your answers become perfect.

What Are Tenses?

It tells you when an action happens.

  • Present tense: now
    • Past tense: earlier
    • Future tense: later

Hindi and English both follow these three basic divisions.

Examples:

I eat food. (present)
I ate food. (past)
I will eat food. (future)

In Hindi:

 Main khana khata hoon
Main ne khana khaya
Main khana khaoonga

Present Tense Exercises 

This tense is used for:

  • actions happening now
    • daily routine
    • facts
    • general truths

Hindi patterns:

Main karta hoon
Tum karte ho
Voh karta hai

Present Indefinite Simple Exercises

Rule

Subject + basic verb + ta, ti, te + hoon, ho, hai, hain

Examples

Main padhai karta hoon
She studies
Voh padhai karti hai

Tum khelte ho
You play

  • Tum Hindi ____ ho (padna) 
  • Voh khana ____ hai (khana) 
  • Hum game ____ hain (khelna) 
  • Unhe Hindi ____ hai (aana)

  • jaata

Exercise 2: Translate 

  • Voh gaana gaati hai 
  • Hum roz padhte hain 
  • Main chai peeta hoon 
  • Unhe cricket pasand hai

Answers:

  • She sings 
  • We study daily 
  • I drink tea 
  • They like cricket

Present Continuous 

Used for actions happening now.

Rule

Subject + verb root + raha, rahi, rahe + hoon, ho, hai

Examples

Main padh raha hoon
I am studying

Voh khel rahi hai
She is playing

Hum kha rahe hain
We are eating

  • Main TV ____ hoon (dekhna) 
  • Tum gana ____ ho (sunna) 
  • Voh kahani ____ hai (likhna) 
  • Unhe kaam ____ hain (karna) 
  • Hum movie ____ hain (dekhna)

Answers:

  • dekh raha 
  • sun rahe 
  • likh rahi 
  • kar rahe 
  • dekh rahe

Exercise 2: Translate 

  • They are waiting 
  • You are talking

Answers:

  • Voh intezar kar rahe hain 
  • Tum baat kar rahe ho

Past Tense 

Used for actions that have already happened.

Patterns:

  • Main gaya
    • Tumne khaya
    • Voh gayi
    • Unhone kiya

Subject + ne + verb (past form)

Examples

Maine khana khaya
I ate food

Usne call kiya
He called

Hum gaye
We went

  • Maine movie ____ (dekhna) 
  • Usne paani ____ (peena) 
  • Tumne car ____ (chalana) 
  • Hum school ____ (jana) 
  • Unhone homework ____ (karna)

  • dekhi 
  • piya

Exercise 2: Translate 

  • She cooked food 
  • They played cricket 
  • You wrote the letter 
  • We watched the match

Answers:

  • Usne khana banaya 
  • Unhone cricket khela 
  • Tumne patra likha 
  • Humne match dekha

Past Continuous 

Used to show action happening at a past time.

Rule

Subject + raha tha, rahi thi, rahe the

Examples

Main padh raha tha
I was studying

Voh so rahi thi
She was sleeping

Hum khel rahe the
We were playing

  • Tum market ja ____ the 
  • Hum class me baith ____ the 
  • Unhe call kar ____ the

  • She was studying 
  • They were talking

  • We were waiting

  • Voh padh rahi thi 
  • Voh baat kar rahe the

  • Hum intezar kar rahe the

Future Tense 

It tells what will happen.

Patterns:

  • Main jaaunga
    • Voh karegi
    • Tum aoge
    • Unhe milega

Subject + verb root + ga, gi, ge

Examples

Main jaaunga
I will go

Voh padhegi
She will study

Hum milenge
We will meet

Make sentences in three tenses

Word: “go”

Present: Main jaata hoon
Past: Main gaya
Future: Main jaaunga

Word: “eat”
Present: Main khata hoon
Past: Maine khaya
Future: Main khaoonga

Word: “read”
Present: Main padhata hoon
Past: Maine padha
Future: Main padhoonga

Common Mistakes

Many make these mistakes:

  • mixing present and past
    • forgetting raha, rahi, rahe
    • using future tense for present plans
    • wrong pronoun agreement

Examples:

Wrong: Maine jaata hoon
Correct: Main jaata hoon

Wrong: Main kal jaata hoon
Correct: Main kal jaaunga

Wrong: Tum karta hai
Correct: Tum karte ho
