English grammar mein tenses action ka time aur duration batate hain. Is tense unme se ek important tense hai jo batata hai ki koi action past mein kisi specific moment par chal raha tha.

Aapne kabhi kisi se suna hoga, “Main us waqt TV dekh raha tha” ya “Woh kal sham ko padh rahi thi.” In dono sentences mein ek action past mein chal raha tha, lekin complete nahi hua tha. English mein aise sentences is tense kehte hain.

Example:

  • I was watching TV.
  • She was studying yesterday evening.

Definition

Is tense batata hai ki koi action past mein kisi particular time par continue ho raha tha. Iska use un actions ke liye hota hai jo us samay tak khatam nahi hue the.

Example:

  • I was reading when you called me.
    Yani jab tumne call kiya, tab main padh raha tha.

Yahan dono actions past mein hue, lekin ek action (reading) doosre action (calling) ke time par chal raha tha.

Formula 

Formula:
Subject + was/were + verb + ing + object

Ismein “was” aur “were” helping verbs hote hain jo subject ke hisaab se badalte hain.

Subject Helping Verb Example
I, He, She, It was I was reading.
You, We, They were They were playing.

Examples:
• I was eating lunch.
• She was writing a letter.
• They were playing cricket.

Positive Sentences 

Formula: Subject + was/were + verb + ing + object

Examples:
• We were watching a movie.
• They were laughing at the joke.

Ye sentences dikhate hain ki action past ke kisi samay par continue tha.

Negative Sentences

Formula: Subject + was/were + not + verb + ing + object

Examples:
• We were not playing football.
• They were not listening to music.

Negative form batata hai ki action us samay par nahi ho raha tha.

Interrogative Sentences

Formula: Was/Were + subject + verb + ing + object?

Examples:
• Was he reading the book?
• Were you studying yesterday?
• Was it raining at night?
• Were they dancing at the party?

Jab question banana ho, to “was” ya “were” sentence ke start mein lagta hai.

Wh-Question Form

Formula: Wh-word + was/were + subject + verb + ing + object?

Examples:
• Where was he going?
• Why were they crying?
• When were you studying?

Wh-words (what, where, why, when) se sentence ka meaning aur clear ho jaata hai.

Common Time Expressions

Is ense ke sath kuch specific time phrases aksar use hote hain:

  • while
    • when
    • at that time
    • yesterday at this time
    • all day long
    • last night
    • in the evening

Examples:
• I was watching TV when he came.
• She was cooking at that time.
• They were working yesterday evening.

Difference Between Simple Past and Past Continuous

Simple:
Action complete ho gaya tha.
Continuous:
Action past mein kisi specific time par chal raha tha.

Type Formula Example
Simple Past Subject + past form of verb I played football.
Past Continuous Subject + was/were + verb + ing I was playing football.

Practice Section

  1. I ______ (read) when you came.
    → I was reading when you came. 
  2. They ______ (play) football yesterday evening.
    → They were playing football yesterday evening.

Practice Tips 

Agar aap is tense fluent banana chahte hain, to apne daily routine ke sentences practice karein. Har sentence mein “was/were” aur “ing” form ka use karein.

Examples:
• I was reading a book yesterday.
• She was watching her favorite show.
• We were talking about our plans.

Daily 5-10 sentences likhne aur bolne ki practice karein. Aap chahein to “while” aur “when” wale sentences se start karein.

Past Continuous aur Past Perfect Tense dono past actions ke liye use hote hain, lekin inka sense alag hai.

  • Past Continuous batata hai ki action chal raha tha.
  • Past Perfect batata hai ki action complete ho chuka tha.

Example:
• I was reading when he came. (Action chal raha tha)
• I had read before he came. (Action complete ho gaya tha)

Dono tenses ka difference samajhna correct tense use karne ke liye bahut zaroori hai.

Real-Life Situations 

Aap Past Continuous ka use apne daily life ke conversations mein kar sakte hain.

Examples:
• Main kal movie dekh raha tha – I was watching a movie yesterday.
• Wo log khana kha rahe the – They were eating food.
• Barish ho rahi thi – It was raining.

In situations mein Past Continuous action ke duration ko dikhata hai.

How to Master 

Grammar rule yaad rakhna kaafi nahi hota. Usko use karna zaroori hai. Iske liye aap kuch habits bana sakte hain:

  • English diary likhna jisme aap likhein kal aap kya kar rahe the.
  • English movies aur shows dekhte waqt sentences note karein jahan “was” aur “were” ka use hua ho.
  • Friends ke sath English practice karein using “while” aur “when” connectors.

Regular practice se aapko tense ke patterns natural lagne lagenge.

Is tense ek simple lekin expressive tense hai jo batata hai ki koi action past mein chal raha tha. Ye tense storytelling, conversations, aur writing sab mein kaam aata hai.
