Present Continuous Tense: An Overview

In Hindi, the Present Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that are happening right now or currently. For example, when you want to say “I am eating,” “She is playing,” or “They are studying,” these sentences use the present continuous tense.

The structure of a Present Continuous Tense sentence in Hindi involves two main components:

  • The verb root (main action)
  • The appropriate helping verb (such as हूँ, हो, है, हैं) based on the subject.

The verb is always in its present continuous form, and the tense helps describe actions happening at the moment of speaking or around this time.

Structure of Present Continuous Tense in Hindi

The structure of the Present Continuous Tense in Hindi is:

Subject + है/हूँ/है + Verb root + रहा/रही/रहे + Object (if any)

The verb “रहा,” “रही,” or “रहे” depends on the gender and number of the subject:

  • रहा for masculine singular subjects (e.g., वह पढ़ रहा है।)
  • रही for feminine singular subjects (e.g., वह पढ़ रही है।)
  • रहे for plural subjects (e.g., वे पढ़ रहे हैं।)

The auxiliary verb changes as per the subject:

  • हूँ (for I) – मैं खा रहा हूँ। (I am eating.)
  • है (for he, she, it) – वह खा रहा है। (He is eating.)
  • हैं (for they, you) – वे खा रहे हैं। (They are eating.)

Example Sentences in Present Continuous Tense:

  • मैं गाना गा रहा हूँ। (I am singing a song.)
  • तुम पढ़ रहे हो। (You are studying.)
  • वह खेल रही है। (She is playing.)
  • वे बाज़ार जा रहे हैं। (They are going to the market.)

Usage of Present Continuous Tense in Hindi

The Present Continuous Tense is used in a variety of contexts:

Actions Happening Right Now

It is used to describe actions that are occurring at the time of speaking. For example:

  • वह दौड़ रहा है। (He is running.)
  • हम टीवी देख रहे हैं। (We are watching TV.)

Temporary Actions or Situations

It also describes actions that are temporary or for a limited period of time.

  • मैं अभी घर पर नहीं हूँ। (I am not at home right now.)
  • वह स्कूल जा रही है। (She is going to school.)

Planned Future Actions

The Present Continuous Tense is sometimes used to express planned or scheduled actions in the near future.

  • मैं कल मुंबई जा रहा हूँ। (I am going to Mumbai tomorrow.)
  • हम अगले सप्ताह छुट्टी पर जा रहे हैं। (We are going on vacation next week.)

Expressing Complaints or Irritation

In informal speech, the Present Continuous Tense is used to express irritation or complaints about an action that is happening continuously.

  • तुम हमेशा मुझे परेशान कर रहे हो! (You are always bothering me!)
  • वह लगातार गाने गा रही है। (She is continuously singing songs.)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When using the Present Continuous Tense in Hindi, there are some common mistakes learners make:

Using the Wrong Form of the Verb “रहा/रही/रहे”

  • Incorrect: वह पढ़ रहे है।
  • Correct: वह पढ़ रहा है। (For singular masculine subject)

Make sure the verb agrees with the gender and number of the subject.

Omitting the Helping Verb

  • Incorrect: मैं गा रहा हूँ। (Without auxiliary verb “हूँ”)
  • Correct: मैं गा रहा हूँ। (The auxiliary verb must always be included.)

Misplacing “रहा/रही/रहे”

  • Incorrect: वह स्कूल जा है।
  • Correct: वह स्कूल जा रहा है। (Correct placement of the auxiliary verb and verb root.)

Practice Sentences with Present Continuous Tense

Here are some more examples to practice:

  • मैं पानी पी रहा हूँ। (I am drinking water.)
